It is essential that all vacant homes are well protected in order to fight against damage due to frost.
It is even more important nowadays because you are less likely to be covered by insurance. We recommend that the main water feed into your home is turned off and the tank drained. We will provide more information on this at a later date.
The second item that has to be dealt with is the heating system and boiler. It is very awkward to drain down this system so it is preferable to set the heat to come on at regular intervals during the day or night. The boiler should be protected by a frost stat but the electric supply switch to the boiler must be turned to “ON”. Check with your plumber and become informed how the heating system works.
At the moment we are carrying out more research on vacant homes with data loggers in order to determine the optimum solution. We suggest using electrical oil filled radiators as back up for the heating system and to set up one of these in each room. The idea is that the will turn on when the temperature drops below 10° C. We have carried out research into various types of oil filled radiators and the three we recommend at the moment are the Delonghi 1500W, Winterwarm 1500W and Deville 1500W oil filled radiators.
Each radiator is fitted with an adjustable thermostat which can be set to turn on and off at the required temperature. This means you can leave these products plugged in when you are away from home during a cold period and not have to worry about freezing temperatures affecting your home.
